Things That are Good for Your TeethYour teeth are important. You can’t imagine life without them. They are needed for speaking and chewing; necessary for everyday living.

You want to take great care for your teeth, but with all the advice out there on the best way to do that, it is difficult to determine what is really essential in maintaining great dental health.

The best way to find out what things are truly great for your teeth is to ask your dentist.

More often than not, he or she will say proper dental hygiene and care, and diet are the most important things you can control to have healthy teeth and gums.

Good Dental Health and Hygiene

Regular, bi-annual visits to your dentist is only a part of proper dental hygiene. It is important to have daily dental habits you do at home for in between visits.

This is what dentists recommend to include in your daily dental hygiene and care habits:

  • Flossing
  • Teeth brushing with a proper toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste
  • Rinse with mouthwash or water

Flossing should be done at least once a day, preferably at the end of the day. It isn’t a bad idea, however, to carry some dental floss with you and use it throughout the day after eating foods that are crunchy or sticky.

Patients need to brush their teeth at least twice a day; once in the morning and again at night before bedtime. A soft-bristled brush is recommended as harder brushes can inadvertently scrape off tooth enamel and cause irritation to the gums. Your toothbrush needs to be replaced every three months.

You should use toothpaste with fluoride in it when brushing your teeth. Fluoride strengthens teeth and kills germs and bacteria that can accumulate to form plaque.

Mouthwash is a way to add an extra layer of clean and protection to your teeth. Mouthwash can rinse out plaque and germs in tight, hard to reach places that floss and brushing can miss. It is recommended that you rinse with water after everything you eat throughout the day. Tap water, which typically includes a trace of fluoride in it is best.

A Good Diet

Besides keeping your teeth clean, you can also protect them by watching what you eat and drink. Foods and drinks high in sugar and acids should be avoided.

Here are the foods and drinks that are best for your teeth:

  • Cheese
  • Yogurt
  • Leafy Greens
  • Apples
  • Carrots
  • Celery
  • Almonds
  • Raisins
  • Sugarless gum

  • Tea
  • Milk
  • Water

Visiting your dentist every six months, properly cleaning your teeth and gums at home and consuming foods and drinks that are good for your teeth, are the best things you can do the ensure great dental health.
