Invisalign is an extremely effective and surprisingly comfortable approach to straightening teeth. By now, a lot of people have heard about it, of course, but not everyone knows exactly what the process involves. You may have heard about it in general terms – that this is a way to straighten teeth without the uncomfortable and unsightly traditional metal braces – but a lot of people don’t know exactly how they work.
So if you’re a candidate for Invisalign, what can you expect when you come in the office?
Invisalign is a series of custom-made aligners that are created specifically for your mouth. They are made with a comfortable plastic and are barely noticeable. The goal is to use these successive aligners to gradually shift your teeth into place. It requires a careful plan, but you simply have to switch to the new set of aligners every so often.
Invisialign can correct a wide range of dental problems, from the very minor to the surprisingly serious. This might include:
- Gapped teeth
- Open bites
- Over crowding
So that’ a bit about what it is and the problems it addresses, but how does it really work?
Step 1 – Come in and talk to us. We’ll evaluate your needs together and make sure this is the right solution for you. We’ll also talk about any of your concerns and questions at that time.
Step 2 – This is where we develop your personalized treatment plan. We’ll take x-rays, pictures, and impressions of your teeth, and then Invisalign will create a digital 3D image of your mouth. We’ll use these images to lay out how we expect your teeth to move throughout the treatment and figure out about how long it will take to see results.
Step 3 – Now we will create a series of custom aligners. You will need to wear them throughout the day, and only remove them to brush, floss, and eat. (You will usually see the best results when you wear them for 20 to 22 hours a day.) Slowly but surely, these aligners will move your teeth where they need to go.
These aligners will be switched about every two weeks as you go through the treatment.
Step 4 – Come in for occasional checkups. We want to make sure everything is still progressing like we expect.
There are a lot of reasons to go with Invisalign over traditional braces:
- The aligners are practically invisible
- Aligners can be removed and easily cleaned
- Aligners are smooth and comfortable and won’t irritate your mouth like braces
- Eat whatever you want
- Your oral health care routines can remain basically the same
- There are no brackets and wires
- Avoid self-conscious thoughts (especially if you’re an adult who thinks you should be “past that stage”)
After the treatment is done, the results are inevitably a new, confident smile. Invisalign treatments are great for adults or teens, and all the benefits make it one of the most popular choices for straightening teeth. You don’t have to be self-conscious about your smile or worried about how you’ll look with big metal braces. Just come in and find out if this is a solution that will work for you.
